2024 Season

Bell Shakespeare returns in 2024 with a selection of some of Shakespeare's most magnificent works.

At Sydney Opera House, the company presents Shakespeare's classic comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream in a breathless production brimming with magic, mirth and mayhem. Directed by Peter Evans, this production is quick as a shadow. Fast, funny and family-friendly, this is A Midsummer Night's Dream reawakened.

Next up, over the harbour in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, Bell Shakespeare presents Shakespeare's epic of the imagination King Lear for the first time since 2010. Directed by Peter Evans, performed in the profoundly intimate setting of The Neilson Nutshell and starring one of Australia's finest classical actors, Robert Menzies, this heart-wrenching new production promises to be powerful and utterly unforgettable.

Finally, the company is excited to return to The Neilson Nutshell with the second installment of its popular production In A Nutshell —The Poetry of Violence. Artistic Director Peter Evans is joined by a team of talented actors as they jump from scene to scene and play to play exploring the various ways Shakespeare investigates violence. From the physical harm, cruelty, and insults, through to the extremes of emotion, and the intensity, hastiness and impetuosity of love in all its forms, this is a curated journey through scenes and speeches from plays including Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, Coriolanus, Richard III, Henry VI, Antony and Cleopatra, Timon of Athens, and Titus Andronicus.

The Poetry of Violence

The Neilson Nutshell, Dawes Point

Presented by Bell Shakespeare
These violent delights have violent ends.

4th to 8th September '24 in 4 months. Tickets $45 to $110

Artistic Director Peter Evans

When Shakespeare explores violence it is often epic and cruel, but never gratuitous. Whether it's Brutus considering a justification for murder in Julius Caesar, or Volumnia relishing the bravery and brutality of her warrior son in Coriolanus, Shakespeare asks questions about our relationship with violence. But he also uses the word to describe the limits of emotion, and the rashness provoked by love and hate.

Join Artistic Director Peter Evans and a crack team of actors as they jump from scene to scene and play to play, exploring the poetry of violence with relish and delight.

From Macbeth to Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet to Richard III, Peter will share insights into Shakespeare's concerns and preoccupations and the inner workings of the plays.

In A Nutshell enthralled audiences in 2022 and Bell Shakespeare are excited to return with a second instalment in 2024.
Whether you are new to Shakespeare, or an aficionado, you will be entertained, enriched, and inspired by this production. Performed in The Neilson Nutshell at Pier 2/3 in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct.
