On this day in 1981, the Rick Springfield single Jessie's Girl debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #81 (March 28)

The song from the boy born in Guildford, in the western suburbs of Sydney, went to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and also in Australia.

At the time it was one of the slowest climbs to the US #1 spot, debuting on 28 March, and taking 19 weeks to reach the top on 1 August, the same day that MTV was launched.

The song from the Working Class Dog LP stayed at #1 for two weeks, and was his only US #1, ultimately spending 32 weeks on the charts.
Billboard ranked it as the #5 song for all of 1981.

Jessie's Girl also won Rick Springfield a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

So who actually is Jessie? And his girl?

Well, Springfield was taking a stained glass-making class with a friend of his named Gary, and Gary's girlfriend (who was the inspiration for the song).
He was initially thinking of calling it Gary's Girl , but decided to go with a different name.

He chose Jessie because he was wearing a T-shirt with the name of football player Ron Jessie on it.

Springfield says that he doesn't remember the name of Gary's girlfriend, and he believes that the real woman who inspired the song has absolutely no idea that she was Jessie's Girl.

Classic 80s song
