Spamalot is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, and a book by Eric Idle. The musical is based on the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail and it is a parody of the Arthurian legend.
The musical follows King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table as they embark on a quest to find the Holy Grail. The journey is filled with comedic twists and turns, including encounters with the Lady of the Lake, the Knights who say Ni, and the Black Knight. Along the way, the characters face many challenges and obstacles, but they never lose sight of their goal.
The musical features a lively and catchy score, including popular songs such as "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," "The Song That Goes Like This," and "He is Not Dead Yet."
Spamalot is a comedic and irreverent musical that will appeal to fans of Monty Python and those who enjoy parodies and satire. The musical is set in a variety of locations including Camelot, and it's filled with memorable moments, jokes and references that will make the audience laugh.
The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs. The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always look on the bright side of life.”
Director Daryl Kirkness describes the production vision:
We will be staging Spamalot in our own new way, so that it suits The Grove performance space. We will making sure that humour is the main stay without changing any of the brilliant original script and score. By lessening the reliance of big Broadway production numbers and making greater use of the brilliance of Monty Python skits, songs and the original Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie.
The whole cast will be a group of ‘young' local kids who very loudly break into the theatre at the start of the show, just after the announcements. They will find props, costumes, musical instruments and scripts on stage and will then proceed to put on this production of Spamalot. They are there to have fun and play havoc. This allows the show to be staged in a simpler way and helps justify that we are in a school hall..
