Brace yourselves. Tina has landed in Oz. It may have taken five years after Tina: The Tina Turner Musical became an overnight sensation in London, but it's been worth the wait.

However, this juke box musical has its downside — a darker tale of domestic abuse, intimidation, exploitation and attempted suicide that starts with the birth of Tina (birth name: Anna Mae Bullock) in the little Tennessee town of Nutbush 84 years ago.

Tina's tale includes growing up with her grandmother, the decision to move to St Louis where she meets Ike Turner, mentor, lover and violent, unfaithful husband.

For me, the musical truly got started with star Ruva Ngwenya's stunning rendition of River Deep, Mountain High.
Her voice sent shivers up my spine, she's that good.

From there, it's hit after hit including Tina's cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Proud Mary, Nutbush City Limits, Let's Stay Together, Private Dancer, We Don't Need Another Hero, What's Love Got to Do With It, Simply the Best and more.

Ngwenya is magnificent as the star of the show.
Ten years ago she made her professional debut on the musical theatre stage and has soared ever since.

Tim Omaji as Ike perfectly captures the essence of the character's brutality.
Omaji was brilliant in the part.

Four children rotate the role of young Anna-Mae — ten year old Amara Kavaliku played Tina as a child in the performance I saw — and what a stunner this youngster is.
A bundle of energy who has a solid future in the industry.

The supporting cast was excellent, including Ibinabo Jack as Tina's mother, Zelma, Nadia Komazec as Rhonda Graam, Mat Verevis as Tina's eventual manager Roger Davies and John O'Hara as Phil Spector and Terry Britten.

Outstanding were the stage and set designs — a constant barrage of lights, colour and video imagery.
Very clever, proving the refurbished Theatre Royal is the perfect venue for this kind of musical.

One of the world's best-selling artists of all time, Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards and her live shows have been seen by millions, with more concert tickets sold than any other solo performer in music history.

When she was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in October, 2021, Tina Turner became one of only three women in the institution's history to be inducted twice (she was initially inducted in 1991, alongside Ike Turner).

This new musical based on the life of legendary artist Tina Turner and presented in association with Tina Turner herself, received its world premiere in April 2018 in London, at the Aldwych Theatre.
In March 2019, the German production opened at Stage Operettenhaus in Hamburg, the Broadway production followed in November 2019 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Dutch production opened at the Beatrix Theater, Utrecht, in February 2020. A third European production opened in Fall 2021 at the Teatro Coliseum in Madrid, Spain and the North American Tour will commence in September 2022.
