CANCELLED

Wyong Musical Theatre | Sunday, 5 March 2023

In a statement from Wyong Musical Theatre - "Wyong Musical Theatre Company has made the difficult decision to cancel our upcoming production of Carrie. After careful consideration we have decided that the content may be too disturbing for some of our audience and cast. The themes of the show include domestic violence, bullying, assault and graphic depictions of blood. We would like to thank all those who showed interest in being part of the production team and cast, and hope you will be keen to join with us in other productions in the future."

The local community has responded with comments such as :-

"Did you not know anything about Carrie before you cast it?"

"When you announce a show like 'Carrie', surely you know what you've signed up for."

"I thought theatre was supposed to be controversial.
What kind of snowflake culture do we live in? Include warnings with the ticket sales and those who find it triggering just won't buy tickets. Easy."

"Bad decision.
You should have staged it with cast who were willing to participate and placed warnings on any advertising for it."

"Surely the Theatre is the one place and space we can unravel, discuss, experience and share these confronting topics?! I appreciate this will have been a tough decision, but it feels like an overly sensitive decision to be making and overlooks the cathartic power of drama and theatre.".

The theatre committee has not responsed to any of this criticism regarding the decision.
