William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright and poet widely considered to be the greatest writer in the English language and one of the greatest playwrights in history. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, he began his career as an actor and writer in London in the late 16th century. He wrote about 38 plays, including classics such as "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet," "Othello," "Macbeth," and "King Lear," and 154 sonnets. His works have been translated into every major language and continue to be performed worldwide. Shakespeare's influence on the English language, literature, and theatre is immeasurable and he is often referred to as the "Bard of Avon.".
